Speech and Swallowing Problems

This assessment is appropriate for individuals who are experiencing hoarseness, loss of vocal range, voice change, vocal fatigue, weak/breathy voice, throat pain or burning, and frequent throat clearing/coughing. 

Videostroboscopy is performed using a rigid or flexible endoscope that is held in the back of the mouth or nose. The larynx/voicebox is visualized while the patient sustains the sound "ee." The exam is recorded and reviewed with the patient at the end of the appointment. The exam itself typically takes less than 5 minutes.

This assessment is appropriate for individuals who are experiencing difficulty swallowing, swallowing changes associated with head and neck cancer, a sensation of something "stuck" in the throat, frequent pneumonias, and unintentional, significant weight loss.  

This study is performed off-site in a radiology department. The patient is asked to eat and drink various consistencies of food and liquid that has been mixed with barium, which allows visualization of the swallowing structures and function in real-time while the patient swallows. The exam itself typically takes 5-10 minutes.
